Why does it seem like your smelling the store bought dishwasher detergent before you can enjoy a sip of latte in a freshly clean cup? If you're like me, and want a detergent that cleans amazingly well, while being natural and non toxic, then this recipe is for you!
Making DIY dishwasher tablets is a great way to save money and control the ingredients in your cleaning products. Here's my favorite recipe for effective homemade dishwasher tablets:
Ingredients:
1 cup washing soda
1 cup baking soda
3/4 cup citric acid
1/2 cup Epsom salt
1/3 cup Thieves Cleaner
15-20 drops of essential oil (I use lemon, lemongrass, or purification essential oils from Young Living)
Instruction:
1. Mix Dry Ingredients:
In a large mixing bowl, combine the washing soda, baking soda, citric acid, and Epsom salt. Stir well to mix all the dry ingredients.
2. Add Wet Ingredients:
In a small separate bowl or measuring cup, combine the Thieves cleaner and essential oil. Add the wet ingredients slowly to the dry mixture, stirring constantly. The cleaner may cause some fizzing, but that's normal.
3. Form the Tablets:
Once everything is mixed and the mixture is damp (but not too wet), press it firmly into an ice cube tray or silicone mold. Use a spoon or your hands to pack it tightly.
4. Drying:
Let the tablets dry for 24-48 hours. The drying time will depend on the humidity level in your environment. The tablets should feel firm and hard when they're done.
5. Storage:
Once dry, pop the tablets out of the mold and store them in an airtight container. You can use one tablet per load in the dishwasher.
Tips:
1. For Extra Grease-Cutting Power: Add 3 tablespoons of Thieves (toxin free) dishwashing liquid to the mixture. This can help tackle grease more effectively.
2. Water Softener: If you have hard water, the Epsom salt can help soften the water and improve cleaning.
3. Adjust Citric Acid: If you want the tablets to dissolve faster, increase the amount of citric acid slightly.
This DIY dishwasher tablet recipe is both eco-friendly and effective!
